Biography

John P. Cunningham (b. 1970, England) is a British multidisciplinary artist based in Kvinnherad, Norway. Known under pseudonyms such as “Nipper” and “John_XC”, Cunningham has been a pivotal figure in Norwegian street art for more than a decade, shaping the visual and cultural landscape of Bergen and Western Norway.

Working across a wide range of media including painting, drawing, installation, performance, and street art, Cunningham explores profound social, emotional, and philosophical themes. His art often blurs the line between the personal and the political, the private and the public, and challenges viewers to question structures of power, identity, and communication.

Between 2010 and 2012, under the name John_XC, Cunningham created over 300 street artworks, most of them in Bergen and across Norway’s west coast. These works — ranging from paste-ups and murals to interactive public installations — invited participation and reflection, transforming urban spaces into platforms for dialogue. His use of recurring characters and symbolic narratives gave his street art a theatrical and conceptual dimension, where each piece contributed to a broader story.

Cunningham’s practice embodies a philosophy of sharing, creativity, and social awareness, making him one of the most influential voices in contemporary Nordic street art. Today, his work continues to evolve, merging fine art traditions with urban expression, and engaging audiences both inside and outside gallery walls.
